China Marks 90th Anniversary of 1911 Revolution

In China ,people are marking the 90th anniversary of the Revolution of 1911 today. The revolution, led by Doctor Sun Yat-sen, overthrew the Qing Dynasty and ended China's feudal history of more than 2,000 years. President Jiang Zemin attended a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and issued new calls for the Taiwan compatriots to strive for China's peaceful reunification.

President Jiang Zemin lauded the efforts by Doctor Sun Yat-sen in leading the bourgeois democratic revolution of 1911. He said Doctor Sun Yat-sen was a great patriot and was key in overthrowing the corrupt Qing Dynasty and creating the Republic of China.

The President said, for the past half century, the Chinese mainland has been striving for the peaceful reunification of the country. The efforts have seen success, with Hong Kong and Macao returning to China in 1997 and 1999 respectively.

He called on the Taiwan compatriots to strive for the same end. United, a nation will prosper, the President said, while divided, it will wither. Reunification will greatly promote China's development.

President Jiang Zemin said dialogues across the Taiwan Straits will facilitate the two-way communication, and the One-China principle remains indispensible. Negotiations can proceed only when the Taiwan authorities recognize the One-China principle.

The President pledges that the Chinese mainland will try one thousand and one ways to achieve a peaceful reunification. And he expressed his firm belief in its ultimate realization.

He called on all people of Chinese origin, regardless of their ethnicity, faith, political affiliation, or nationality, to join hands and strive for the prosperity of the Chinese nation.
