Chinese watch makers ask for compensation from Basel Watch Show
   CCTV.COM   2003-06-06 15:06:33
Chinese watch makers are demanding compensation from the organizers of the Basel World Watch Show, after they were barred from participating in the March event because of fears of SARS.

China's Watch Association is seeking a payment of 1.2 million dollars to cover the losses incurred by their delegation who had already arrived in Switzerland before learning that they would not be allowed to participate in the world's largest watch exhibition. The mostly Shenzhen-based producers were told just one day before the show opened that delegations from China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region would be refused entry as a precaution against the spread of SARS.

The China Watch Association says being unable to participate was a major blow to the Shenzhen producers who export about 90 percent of their products. Orders this year are already down by about 20 percent.
